Why Gas Fireplace Inspections Are Important

Gas fireplaces may not produce creosote like wood-burning fireplace systems, but they still require regular maintenance. Dust, soot, and moisture can accumulate over time, affecting the pilot light, flame quality, and overall performance. Faulty sensors, burners, or ventilation can pose safety risks if not addressed early.

Annual gas fireplace service ensures:

  • Safe ignition and operation
  • Efficient fuel use
  • Strong, consistent flame performance
  • Prevention of soot buildup and moisture damage
  • Early detection of worn or failing components

Routine inspections are also often required by manufacturers to maintain your fireplace’s warranty.

What Our Gas Fireplace Tune-Up Service Includes

Our gas fireplace inspection and cleaning service is designed to identify issues before they become costly or dangerous. We work on all types of systems, including gas fireplace inserts and vented gas logs.

Your tune-up includes:

  • Inspection and testing of electrical sensors for proper voltage to and from the gas burner
  • Cleaning of key components, such as the thermopile and thermocouple, to extend system life
  • Inspection and cleaning of the burner and orifices to ensure clean, efficient combustion
  • Testing of remote and receiver systems, including battery replacement (if applicable)
  • Cleaning of gas logs and glass doors using ammonia-free fireplace glass cleaner
  • Evaluation of log placement to prevent flame impingement and soot buildup
  • Optional addition or replacement of rock wool embers for enhanced ember glow
  • Camera inspection of the chimney flue if your fireplace vents through a masonry chimney
  • Review of any gas fireplace repairs that may be needed

Frequently Asked Questions About Gas Fireplace Inspections

How often should a gas fireplace be inspected?

We recommend having your gas fireplace inspected and tuned up once a year, ideally before the heating season begins. This ensures safety, performance, and compliance with most manufacturer warranties.

What does a gas fireplace tune-up include?

A typical tune-up includes sensor and burner testing, thermopile and thermocouple cleaning, battery replacement, burner orifice cleaning, log placement review, ember replacement (if needed), and cleaning of the glass and firebox.

Why is my gas fireplace not igniting?

Common causes include a dirty thermopile or thermocouple, worn-out receiver batteries, a clogged burner orifice, or a faulty ignition system. A professional inspection can pinpoint and correct the issue.

Can you inspect gas inserts and vented gas logs, too?

Yes. Our team inspects and services all major types of gas fireplaces, including gas insert and gas log cleaning service. We’ll ensure proper combustion, clean log placement, and safe ventilation.

We didn't know what was wrong with our chimney, but could see moisture was damaging the plaster in the ceiling around it. We consulted a roofer who said the issue was the flashing (on the roof just above the room where damage was visible). New flashing had absolutely no effect. Talked to another roofer who admitted he was stumped and recommended a company called "Chimney Scientists". Best recommendation EVER. The Chimney Scientist inspector recognized the problem immediately: unfortunate repairs in the 1980s to this chimney built in 1900 used a modern type of mortar (Portand cement) that trapped moisture inside our chimney, forcing water out through brick (and then into surrounding ceiling plaster). This past week Chimney Scientists rebuilt our chimney in the top floor of our house and up through the roof using historic lime-based mortar. They found reclaimed brick that closely matches our original brick for the exposed chimney inside the house. Above the roof, they used new brick that will resist the elements for a long, long time. End result: a gorgeous, healthy chimney inside and out. During the job, they provided thorough protection around their work area. At the end of the job, they cleaned up to perfection. All along the way, they cheerfully provided crystal clear and detailed explanations. Maybe best of all: they LISTEN. Whenever we had any concerns or questions, we were heard and any needed adjustments were made right away. The name Chimney Scientists isn't just great branding: these guys really DO understand the science behind chimneys and they take great pride in skillfully solving chimney problems. 10 stars out of 5.
