Professional Chimney Inspections in the Greater Philadelphia & Pocono Region

A safe chimney starts with a professional inspection. Whether you’re preparing for fireplace season, purchasing a new home, or experiencing performance issues, Chimney Scientists offers certified chimney inspections tailored to your needs.

We serve the Greater Philadelphia area, including Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, and Delaware counties, as well as the Pocono region in Lehigh, Carbon, and Monroe counties with thorough, code-compliant evaluations you can trust.

Why Chimney Inspections Are So Important

Many chimney hazards are hidden from plain sight. Cracks, creosote buildup, structural wear, and blockages can all develop without obvious symptoms—until it’s too late. Regular chimney inspections protect your home and family by:

  • Identifying safety issues before they become costly
  • Reducing the risk of chimney fires or carbon monoxide exposure
  • Ensuring proper venting of smoke and combustion gases
  • Meeting local codes, insurance requirements, or real estate regulations

Whether your system is brand new or decades old, inspections are essential to safe chimney maintenance.

What To Expect From Our Certified Chimney Inspection

At Chimney Scientists, all inspections follow Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards. We offer both Level 1 and Level 2 chimney inspections, depending on your system’s condition and usage:

Level 1 Chimney Inspection

A Level 1 inspection is ideal for systems that haven’t changed and show no signs of damage or malfunction. This inspection includes:

  • A visual assessment of accessible chimney components (interior and exterior)
  • Evaluation of the flue, firebox, damper, smoke chamber, and chimney cap
  • Basic review of clearances and construction

This level of inspection is best for homeowners who use their fireplaces regularly and haven’t experienced any issues.

Level 2 Chimney Inspection

A Level 2 inspection is more comprehensive, but no removal or destruction of permanently attached portions of the chimney or building structure or finish is required. A Level 2 inspection is more comprehensive and includes everything from a Level 1, plus:

  • Internal chimney video scan using a high-resolution camera
  • Review of the attic, crawlspace, or basement areas near the chimney
  • Detailed chimney inspection report with photos and documentation

Fireplace flue liners with cracks and open mortar joints can be dangerous when combined with any creosote buildup. A quick video inspection will ensure that the fireplace is a tight system. In the case that these concerning cracks and holes are found, we can offer a repair rather than an expensive new chimney liner.

The Benefits of a Chimney Flue Inspection

Your chimney flue plays a crucial role in ventilation, and damage here can pose serious safety risks. That’s why every Level 2 inspection includes a chimney flue inspection using advanced video scanning.

Benefits include:

  • Early detection of flue liner cracks, gaps, or deterioration
  • Improved appliance performance and draft
  • Reduced risk of fire and carbon monoxide exposure
  • Documentation for insurance or home sale purposes

If we detect flue issues, we can provide expert recommendations for flue repair.

When To Schedule a Chimney Inspection

You should schedule a chimney safety inspection:

  • Annually, even if you don’t use your fireplace often
  • Before purchasing or selling a home as part of real estate inspection services
  • After a chimney fire, lightning strike, or severe weather event
  • If you’re converting your fireplace to gas or installing a new appliance
  • When you notice odors, smoke backup, or poor draft

An inspection can help determine whether a simple cleaning is needed or if more serious issues are present. We also offer chimney cleaning services if we find buildup during your inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chimney Inspections

What does a chimney inspection include?

What a chimney inspection includes depends on the level. A Level 1 inspection includes a visual review of all accessible parts of your chimney. A Level 2 inspection adds video scanning and attic/basement evaluations, along with a detailed report and photo documentation.

How often should I have my chimney inspected?

The National Fire Protection Association recommends annual chimney inspections, regardless of how often it’s used.

What’s the difference between a chimney inspection and a cleaning?

A chimney inspection assesses the condition of your chimney system, while a cleaning removes creosote, soot, and blockages. We often perform both during the same appointment for full maintenance coverage.

Do I need a certified chimney inspector?

Yes, you should hire a certified chimney inspector. A certified inspector follows CSIA standards, understands complex chimney systems, and uses professional tools to detect hazards that an untrained eye might miss.

Will I receive a chimney inspection report?

Yes, we provide you with a full report. After your inspection, you’ll receive a digital chimney inspection report with findings, photos, and any safety or repair recommendations.

We didn't know what was wrong with our chimney, but could see moisture was damaging the plaster in the ceiling around it. We consulted a roofer who said the issue was the flashing (on the roof just above the room where damage was visible). New flashing had absolutely no effect. Talked to another roofer who admitted he was stumped and recommended a company called "Chimney Scientists". Best recommendation EVER. The Chimney Scientist inspector recognized the problem immediately: unfortunate repairs in the 1980s to this chimney built in 1900 used a modern type of mortar (Portand cement) that trapped moisture inside our chimney, forcing water out through brick (and then into surrounding ceiling plaster). This past week Chimney Scientists rebuilt our chimney in the top floor of our house and up through the roof using historic lime-based mortar. They found reclaimed brick that closely matches our original brick for the exposed chimney inside the house. Above the roof, they used new brick that will resist the elements for a long, long time. End result: a gorgeous, healthy chimney inside and out. During the job, they provided thorough protection around their work area. At the end of the job, they cleaned up to perfection. All along the way, they cheerfully provided crystal clear and detailed explanations. Maybe best of all: they LISTEN. Whenever we had any concerns or questions, we were heard and any needed adjustments were made right away. The name Chimney Scientists isn't just great branding: these guys really DO understand the science behind chimneys and they take great pride in skillfully solving chimney problems. 10 stars out of 5.
