Professional Gas Fireplace Inserts & Installation in the Greater Philadelphia & Pocono Areas

If your wood-burning fireplace is drafty, inefficient, or rarely used, upgrading to a gas fireplace insert is one of the easiest ways to add warmth and value to your home. Whether you’re looking for energy savings, cleaner air, or just easier fireplace use, our gas heating inserts deliver efficiency, comfort, and modern convenience.

Chimney Scientists provides expert installation of gas fireplace inserts throughout the Greater Philadelphia area, including Montgomery, Bucks, Chester, and Delaware counties, along with Carbon, Lehigh, and Monroe counties in the Pocono region.

What Are Gas Fireplace Inserts?

A gas fireplace insert is a self-contained, high-efficiency firebox designed to fit directly into your existing masonry or prefab fireplace. Unlike gas logs, which rely on the original fireplace structure, inserts are sealed systems that offer controlled heat output, reduced emissions, and stylish design options.

We install only sealed gas fireplace inserts and direct vent gas inserts, which safely vent combustion gases outside and pull in fresh air from the outdoors. This eliminates the need for a chimney damper while boosting efficiency.

Benefits of Energy-Efficient Gas Inserts

Today’s high-efficiency gas fireplace inserts are designed to meet the needs of modern homes. Homeowners love them because they offer:

  • Lower heating bills: Heat the rooms you use most without overworking your central system.
  • Cleaner combustion: You won’t need to worry about smoke, indoor air pollutants, or creosote anymore.
  • Simple operation: Many models feature push-button starts or remote controls.
  • No more firewood: Say goodbye to hauling logs and concerns about running out of fuel.
  • Attractive finishes: Choose from classic or contemporary designs to match your décor.

If you’re looking for a low-maintenance fireplace upgrade, energy-efficient gas inserts offer unmatched performance and ease of use.

Direct Vent vs. Sealed Gas Fireplace Inserts

At Chimney Scientists, we install direct vent gas inserts—sealed combustion systems that use a co-linear venting setup. These systems draw air in from the outside for combustion and vent exhaust gases back out through the same chimney or wall penetration.

Benefits of sealed and direct vent technology include:

  • 70–85% efficiency ratings
  • Better indoor air quality than with a wood-burning fireplace
  • Consistent, thermostat-controlled heat
  • Safe operation with no open flames or backdrafts

This type of insert is ideal for homes with an existing chimney, and it’s the industry standard for gas fireplace conversions.

Gas Insert Installation Process

Our gas insert installation services include everything from venting and gas line setup to custom trim and surround finishes. Here’s what you can expect:

  1. Home evaluation and venting compatibility check
  2. Measurement and product selection with style and heat output recommendations for your living space

Maintenance Tips for Gas Fireplace Inserts

Gas fireplace inserts require far less maintenance than wood-burning units, but routine upkeep is still important for performance and safety.

Here’s how to keep your insert in top shape:

  • Have it inspected annually to check for debris, wear, and gas connection integrity
  • Clean the glass and burners to maintain flame visibility and airflow
  • Test your remote and thermostat at the start of the heating season

Our team offers professional service and troubleshooting for all installed natural gas or propane units.

Frequently Asked Questions About Gas Fireplace Inserts

What is a gas fireplace insert?

A gas fireplace insert is a sealed firebox that fits into your existing fireplace, providing high-efficiency heat with a gas flame and no need for firewood.

How do direct vent gas inserts work?

Direct vent inserts work by using two vents—one to draw in outdoor air for combustion, and another to expel exhaust. This keeps indoor air clean and improves efficiency.

Are gas fireplace inserts energy-efficient?

Yes, most high-efficiency gas inserts have 70–85% efficiency ratings and allow zone heating for frequently used rooms, reducing your overall energy use.

Can I convert my wood-burning fireplace to a gas insert?

Yes, most traditional fireplaces can be converted using a sealed gas insert or vented gas log set. Our team will assess your fireplace and chimney to determine the best option.

What is involved in the gas insert installation process?

Installation includes venting evaluation, gas line hookup, chimney prep, insert placement, and a full system check. We handle all permits and ensure code compliance.

How often should gas fireplace inserts be maintained?

Gas fireplaces require little maintenance, but we recommend you schedule maintenance at least once a year. Annual inspections and cleaning help ensure safe operation and extend the life of your unit.

We didn't know what was wrong with our chimney, but could see moisture was damaging the plaster in the ceiling around it. We consulted a roofer who said the issue was the flashing (on the roof just above the room where damage was visible). New flashing had absolutely no effect. Talked to another roofer who admitted he was stumped and recommended a company called "Chimney Scientists". Best recommendation EVER. The Chimney Scientist inspector recognized the problem immediately: unfortunate repairs in the 1980s to this chimney built in 1900 used a modern type of mortar (Portand cement) that trapped moisture inside our chimney, forcing water out through brick (and then into surrounding ceiling plaster). This past week Chimney Scientists rebuilt our chimney in the top floor of our house and up through the roof using historic lime-based mortar. They found reclaimed brick that closely matches our original brick for the exposed chimney inside the house. Above the roof, they used new brick that will resist the elements for a long, long time. End result: a gorgeous, healthy chimney inside and out. During the job, they provided thorough protection around their work area. At the end of the job, they cleaned up to perfection. All along the way, they cheerfully provided crystal clear and detailed explanations. Maybe best of all: they LISTEN. Whenever we had any concerns or questions, we were heard and any needed adjustments were made right away. The name Chimney Scientists isn't just great branding: these guys really DO understand the science behind chimneys and they take great pride in skillfully solving chimney problems. 10 stars out of 5.
