The PCR Treatment

Removing Severe Levels of Creosote from Your Chimney

Creosote naturally builds up over time in wood-burning fireplaces. Basically, it is a byproduct of wood combustion, which consists mainly of tar.

As it inevitably builds up over months and years, your potential for an accidental chimney fire increases. If upon inspection, we are concerned that your home is at risk, we may recommend a chemical treatment, Poultice Creosote Remover (PCR), to destroy this creosote buildup.

This product is designed to fully remove second and third-degree creosote from your flue tiles or stainless-steel chimney liners. It essentially dissolves and absorbs the creosote in the process. It does take 24-48 hours to completely dry, in which time the creosote changes from a glaze to a flake form which can then be removed by a chimney sweep by our team. Thus, with the natural dry time, this requires two visits.

Here is the general process you can anticipate in your home.

First Home Visit:

Our team covers the entire room, as well as a walking path through the house, in plastic to ensure total cleanliness during the process.
We then mix the PCR chemicals outside to avoid any unnecessary contact or accidental inhalation.
We will fasten a large 1500CFM fan to the top of your chimney.
If needed, we will also begin to clean the chimney with rotary chains or brushes beforehand.
Using a steel compression canister and gun, we will spray the inside of the chimney with a coating of PCR from inside the house. A fan will pull all the gases out of the chimney during the application process.
If needed, we will block off the smoke chamber area after the first spray and spray again from the top down.
We will then need to wait a minimum of 24 hours for PCR to dry.

Second Home Visit:

Once we have confirmed that the PCR has dried, we will know it has pulled the level 2 and 3 glazed creosote out of the masonry pores to the surface.
We will once again cover the entire room in plastic, and we will use rotary spinning chains to remove the dried PCR material from the surface of the inside of the chimney.
A blow torch inside the firebox may be used in place of the fan to create an upward draft during the second visit.

Our team will thoroughly inspect and write a report onsite, identifying any problems and aspects of your chimney with a video camera (level 2) before issuing any estimates. The process takes about 1-2 hours.

The report includes pictures of your chimney identifying the issues and how to fix them, as well as diagrams and illustrations of the chimney’s composition so that you will get a better understanding of how they work and how they are constructed. For your awareness, this service is $162. We will then credit you back the $162 toward any work that is completed with our company.
